The Maple Ridge Recreation Facility Study evaluated whether existing recreation facilities could meet current and future community needs by analyzing utilization, demographic growth, and long-term service-level requirements across aquatics, arenas, fitness, gymnasiums, and outdoor sport amenities. The study was initiated to determine the feasibility and scale of major new investments needed to close service gaps and maintain equitable access over a 20-year horizon.
Background
Credit: City of Maple Ridge
Process
The analysis applied population projections, per-capita service standards, and utilization data to model future demand and assess required facility capacity, including detailed projections for annual swims, ice hours, and indoor program space. Community engagement through surveys, open houses, focus groups, and submissions was used to validate demand findings and test alignment with preferred future facility concepts and locations.
Solution
The study quantified significant long-term service gaps, including an aquatic capacity shortfall of approximately 330,000 annual swims and a requirement for two additional ice sheets to meet projected 2044 demand. New facilities and location options were identified based on feasibility, public interest, and strategic analysis.
The Results
additional swims required by 2044
additional ice sheets required by 2044
touchpoints with community members through multi-method engagement
