Vancouver General Hospital (VGH)’s Emergency Department (ED) faced immediate pressures requiring additional and improved patient spaces.
Background
Credit: Cornerstone Planning Group
Process
Cornerstone developed an Interim Space Accommodations Plan to provide a clinically sound and cost-effective renovation solution to bridge the 7-10 year gap before Master Planning could be implemented. Workshops were held with ED stakeholders, including clinicians, using evaluation criteria focused on clinical outcomes, staff and patient experience, alignment with VGH’s vision, and cost considerations.
Solution
Cornerstone prepared a report outlining space requirements, operational impacts, efficiency, and patient flow. Key risks and mitigation strategies were summarized, and a preferred option was identified to maximize patient spaces while maintaining a clinically appropriate design within project constraints. The report provided VGH with a clear path forward for next steps based on a collaborative foundation.
The Results
workshops with clinicians
additional patient spaces found over baseline
annual volumes supported within the same footprint
