The ʔaq̓am Nation wanted to explore the development of a Multi-Use Sports Complex and Community Centre to serve as a regional destination for sports, culture, and recreation. Cornerstone was engaged to conduct this feasibility study, assessing local and regional recreational assets and evaluating the potential for a multi-use facility to provide long-term area benefits, including promoting healthy lifestyles and supporting economic growth by attracting visitors from beyond the community.
Background
Process
ʔaq̓am leadership proposed several types of recreation and community spaces for consideration. Cornerstone analyzed the community and area population demand and existing recreational assets to assess the potential for a facility to accommodate a variety of uses. The facility uses were ranked using a multi-criteria analysis. Interviews with user groups and a community survey aimed to balance community needs with regional demand, economic impacts (financial analysis), and opportunities for employment, learning, and lifestyle improvements.
Solution
Cornerstone’s feasibility study outlined potential components for the Multi-Use Sports Complex and Community Centre and their associated economic and community benefits. Recommendations provide a strategic guide for ʔaq̓am leadership, prioritizing options that support health, education, and employment objectives. Preliminary capital cost estimates were prepared, along with applicable grants and funding opportunities.
