Background

Cornerstone Planning Group was engaged by the Government of Yukon to assess three arenas in Whitehorse. The assessment aimed to evaluate current facility conditions, determine readiness to meet the standards for the 2027 Canada Winter Games, and identify opportunities for expansion.

Process

The assessment included a review of existing facilities and the development of two accommodation options, each proposing an additional ice sheet and arena facility to support the Games. The analysis considered necessary renovations, site access, parking, and post-Games use. Benefits and challenges of each option including capital and operating costs were also identified, and the ice event schedule and bid application form were updated as part of the process.

Solution

Cornerstone delivered an Arena Assessment Report outlining deficiencies in the existing arenas and proposing viable solutions. The report included quantitative comparisons of accommodation options, recommendations for required upgrades, and guidance for future expansion to meet Canada Winter Games standards.

The Results

4

ice sheets required to support the Games

2

accommodation options, one expansion and one new standalone

4,577
