Background: Cornerstone Planning Group was retained by CN Rail to manage a public process in response to the 2005 train derailment and subsequent spill of sodium hydroxide into the Cheakamus River near Squamish, B.C. Cornerstone’s duties included the design, implementation and facilitation a long-term (2006 – 2013) public advisory body.
Our Solution: Cornerstone responsibilities include the development and facilitation of a stakeholder team (public advisory group); organizing and facilitating open houses; developing communications materials including a website; and, providing strategic communications advice to a Technical Committee, comprising representatives of CN, Ministry of Environment, Department of Fisheries and Oceans; District of Squamish and Squamish First Nation.
Results: Tom Sadleir (stakeholder team facilitator) and Cornerstone helped to ease local stakeholder concerns and reassure them that restoration efforts were sincere, innovative, and comprehensive. Multiple recovery plans for the Cheakamus River have been developed, implemented and completed.
